Our Areas of Impact: Prioritize the Resilience of the Land and Sea
Our vision is a flourishing and resilient land and ocean.
This work is frequently referred to as “restoration.” We are hesitant to use that term, however, because it implies a return to a previous time that no longer exists. Humans, for instance, have now been part of the ecology of these landscapes, creating the impossibility of rewilding to pre-human times. What point in time do we rebuild to, given that our baselines have shifted, and that climate change is reorganizing entire ecosystems and the communities within them?
We believe the degradation of land and sea provides a unique opportunity for innovation, and we have a sense of optimism that we can bring our planet back together. All of our work prioritizes the prevention of any modifications - driven by humans - of the environment and habitats that species depend on. This includes solutions that address unsustainable agriculture, logging, or fragmentation, and which maintain the natural processes that are necessary to support and augment biodiversity.
